#B.I.G Thank You from Coach C

Dear CrossFit IslandFit, CrossFit 246, CrossFit 12-12-12 and unaffiliated athletes, staff members, volunteers and family,
This past Saturday, April 26th 2014, was one that will forever be seared into memory. The vision I had long held for this national-level event (which would later be named the Barbados IslandFit Games) was one of inclusion, motivation, uninhibited athleticism and (above all else) an atmosphere of mutual support and fun. It was to be an event in which all athletes, former athletes and ‘wanna-be’ athletes would have a level playing field on which to find their inner champions. I am happy to say that actuality far surpassed my vision.
From the day the announcement of the event was made, there was a supportive buzz. Athletes started probing about “muscle ups” and “pistols”. Members were eager to volunteer. Even some Directors were “fussy” about the possibility of a swim to be included.
As we moved forward, setting the location and inviting sponsors with a tight time-frame and even tighter budget, it was clear to me that while this would be one of the most intensive events I’ve ever produced or managed, when all was done, it would be well worth it.
And so it is.

I am proud to say that once again we have made event history in Barbados (the first being the Patsy Callender Challenge). We, the collective that is the CrossFit community in Barbados, along with all the sponsors, fellow boxes CF246 and CF12-12-12 have done something that has made heroes out of everyday men and women.

From Cheryl and Dana being encouraged, cheered and coached through the ‘impossible’; to the Fit Crews going head to head exchanging leads to the final round; to Shane’s threatening comeback on the pull-ups in the final; Ryan’s ‘beast mode’ as he moved the rig; Quontana’s steely gaze as he ploughed through; Carlyle on the knees to elbows; Niska on the wall balls; Emma when she ‘pick it up!’ on the front squats; Lyndsay’s technique on the Ground to Overheads; to Jodi, Kim, Russell and Ramon showing what competitive spirit and digging deep is truly all about… I could go on and on because indeed every single competitor on Saturday showed their mettle and refreshed my belief in the beauty and strength that is the heroic human spirit.

The volunteers too dug deep and were inspiring to me, coming up with suggestions for solving ‘teething problems’ on the fly. The judges, all of whom could have competed well on the day, are here now given a big pat on the back for their sacrifice. Thanks to Dr Gaskin and Dr McIntyre for providing additional medical volunteers, supplies and contingencies to bolster the medical team. Kudos to the tabulators, registration crew and door staff for staying calm and collected throughout. Of extra special note is massage therapist Kristin Rojas of The Tridosha who gave free massages to the athletes for the entire day! Well done!

Athletes and volunteers; sponsors and providers; we did well because of you.

Therefore, on behalf of the Directors (Coach Dr Phil Gaskin, Coach Dr Garth McIntyre and Andre Holder) and all staff of CrossFit IslandFit, I say a BIG Thank You to you all! May you continue to grow from this experience and all that it has brought; and may you find strength, will and glory in all your endeavours henceforth.

With gratitude,
Coach C.

Run Barbados Weekend – a special message from Coach G

PastedGraphic-1 (1) PastedGraphic-2

Greetings FitFam,

What an awesome weekend. So many members, and the box itself, have exceeded expectations.
A really great and inspiring turnout by the membership for the events of the Run Barbados weekend, bringing the competitive side of the year to an end.
I know many of you crushed your previous personal bests. A member told me 11 minutes off her last 10K time.
Some personal targets that persons thought may never have been attained were attained.
Where there wasn’t a PB ( as in my case) there was still a tremendous satisfaction in participation and being a part of something great. Moms, MERI, Endurance squad, ADP, Games Prep- this weekend we were CFIF.
If it wasn’t known before it was known today- The Sport Of Fitness Has Arrived! And they ain’t seen nuttin yet!
We have brought the big Digicel CEO Challenge Cup home to IslandFitHQ, where it will spend the next year……. at least. There are already rumblings that us taking that was in some way unfair. Our CEO was just that – a CEO of a new, vibrant company. So happens that our business is bringing home trophies!!!
There has been a lot of hardware collected over the weekend. Finishers medals, challenge medals and age group prizes. We want a picture of them ALL, along with the Digicel CEO Trophy. We are asking you all to label your medals and bring them to HQ next time you visit. By Saturday we will start giving them back to you. We know what they mean to you and will respect that.
Coach P has said, “Every finish line is the start line for another race”
The late, great, GIANT Nelson Mandela ended his book “Long Walk to Freedom” by saying (the italics are my additions)- “I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me ( to revel in my fitness), to look back at the distance I have come. But I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom (fitness) comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.”

So, what next? One of my greatest sporting activities. The Great Train Run! Held mid February last year was a tremendous experience as we traversed Bridgetown to Belleplaine, 40K, as a team in a relay across the old train route. Unfortunately the organizer has said he doesn’t plan to do so next year but should anyone else (Hash House Harriers are contemplating) do so, CrossFit IslandFit will put out a number of teams. Meanwhile some of our members continue to prepare for the Miami Marathon.
So, once again everyone, congratulations. Keep WODing and keep having fun.
Coach G

CFIF Shoe Collection Drive

CFIF Shoe Collection Drive

Dear Fit Fam,

Run Barbados is over and Christmas is rapidly descending on us. This is the time when we often trade in our old foot wear and make way for something new. We have started an initiative at IslandFitHQ- Covering Feet Inspiring Fitness- whereby we hope to collect used shoes in reasonable condition and distribute them to the needy. The primary focus is adult athletic wear but all shoes are welcomed.
We are aware that many people change shoes because of:
  • Style
  • On-line orders that didn’t fit right
  • Recommended mileage exceeded
  • Brand loyalty etc
Very often these shoes are still is reasonable condition.
Please support the cause.

Independence Week approaches!

Hey there IslandFit Fam!

Firstly, as you know, our national Independence Day approaches. As such, Monday November 25th marks the beginning of Independence Week at IslandFit!

Therefore, beginning Monday you are encouraged (strongly) to wear a blue/yellow SHIRT or PANTS every time you visit the box. Let’s show off our national pride as we get fitter in the upcoming week!

barbados flag

Secondly, Thursday Throwdown is coming up this Thursday November 28th at 8:30pm. The format will be Team Juno vs Team Zeus and all who sign up will be randomly placed on a team. Who will win? Nobody knows but what we do know is that it will be extremely exciting since our sister box CrossFit246 will be bringing some athletes over to join the fun! So athletes, register early! Spectators, plan to be there!

Finally, our end of month Bring-A-Friend Event is slated for this INDEPENDENCE DAY, November 30th, Saturday at 2pm. That’s right: an Independence Day WOD!!! Everyone MUST wear an article (SHIRT or PANTS) of clothing which is CLEARLY our NATIONAL BLUE or YELLOW (technically ultramarine and gold) or face the penalty. Members who bring friends/guests who do not follow this directive will be DOUBLY penalized :-). It’s going to be an evening affair worthy of our national heroes (National Hero WOD perhaps? hmmm…) so come early and be prepared to stay late. PLUS we will also be celebrating October AND November born members, so if you’re a member whose birthday falls in either of those months, come enjoy the WOD for FREE!

As always, we look forward to training with you all this week. Have a great weekend and see you Monday with flags on!

Cheers!
