Awesome Athlete of the Week – Sonia

This week, we meet athlete Sonia Kellman!

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ?

9 months.

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time?

I was getting bored with the training that I was doing and was asking around about other options when a friend told me about a new gym that had opened up. I went to check it out and decided to give it a try.

Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

The morning that I went to see the gym there was a wod going on and I stayed to watch and at that moment I knew that I had found the gym that I was looking for.

What are your fave training shoes?

My Nikes for in the box training but my Asics for  running.

Do you remember your first workout? What was it like?

I cannot remember what my first work out was.

What tunes do you like working out to?

I prefer to listen to calypso or it must be music that has a really uptempo beat. Mind you when the workout is intense and I am trying to make it through it I do not hear any music until it is all over.

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

I would have to say that my commitment to working out has changed. I never used to train in the evenings . But now whenever I am finished working (sometimes I leave work come train and then go back) tired or not I head for the gym.

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

When I an not working out I am at work, at home reading or watching some picture or the other or taking my daughter to some activity or other.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?

When I go to the box and I see others training and mastering new techniques that makes me want to do the same.

Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you?

Head Coach Cary and Coach Phil.

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

I would have to say participating in the Crossfit Open. I didn’t believe that I would have been able to do it but I am pleased about the results I achieved.

What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date?

Being able to run 5 kilometers.

What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed?

I am currently working on handstands and muscle ups.

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

To be able to run the 10k .

What  advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?

I would say to them stop thinking and do. It is really the best Barbados has to offer in terms of getting fit and strong and it is not only just a gym but a family. There is always someone there to help or encourage and challenge you whether it is a coach or a member.

 What’s your favourite cheat meal?

I don’t have a favorite cheat meal per say but when I am not eating “clean” I would have ice cream.

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

The one WOD that I would like to do is a time cap of deadlifts , pistols and a hand stand walk. But for now it would be deadlifts , running, and and squats.

Athlete of the Week – Fairoza Patel

What’s your name? Fairoza Patel

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ? 7 months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time?

I was first introduced to Crossfit when I visited Crossfit 9/11 Miami back in 2012 with Chef Paul. For sometime I’ve given it some thought, kept hearing about it until I’ve decided that in September 2013 becoming a member of CrossFit:IslandFit was going to be a birthday treat to myself. Now I’m more involved…It’s a challenge but I love it!

Was there a pivotal event that led you to us? Visiting CrossFit 9/11 in Miami

What are your fave training shoes? My INOV-8 249’s are on the way!

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like?
Checking back my Instagram, I believe it was DE (Dynamic Effort) Shoulder Press 7×3 @ 60% on :45 sec ;then 5 rounds for time of: 8 push press (75/55), 16 Back Squats (75/55) and 200m Run. It was rough at first but it didn’t stop me from attending the box daily and it made me feel great!

“It doesn’t get easier, you just become stronger.”

What tunes do you like working out to?
Soca, dance, a bit of rock preferbly old (Guns N’ Roses type of stuff) and my ‘speech tune’ that I like to listen to repeatedly is the motivational speech ‘Why do we fall.’

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?
Being committed to training and stay active in everything I do, more focused and if I’m tired after a day’s work I make the effort to attend a WOD, the feeling after is amazing!

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

What do you mean? I Crossfit at my desk! Joking…maybe. 🙂
Monday – Friday and weekends (if necessary) I’m at Red advertising&marketing ltd. When not at the box, I’m either at the beach, meditating, off-roading with friends, reading & learning something new, cooking, watching CrossFit videos or catching up on series.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?

The vibe in the box as I enter, every member even the front desk as they greet you!

Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you? Does Pukie the clown count? I love him! Coach C and Coach J but all the coaches are inspiring, you guys always work hard to help others where they are!

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

I thought it was 14.2 with 9 overhead squats with the RX weight of 65 lbs on my 2nd try but I thought wrong! Completing the very last WOD for the CrossFit Games Open Season, 14.5 was my achievement, it took a while with the time of 61:12

It was challenging especially doing it at 4:30am (as if getting up at that time is ever a problem :-)) but I pulled through and completed it. Thanks Coach Garth for judging, Coach Chanda, Coach Cary and the MERI crew for the encouragement. You guys are amazing!

What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date? None yet, but participating with The CF:IF team who placed 2nd at the Funathon to support International Women’s Day!

roza2

What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed?
Everything in Crossfit! But I’d say muscle ups, double unders, handstand push ups and handstand walks.

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

Continue to enjoy the journey with what IslandFit has to offer, take part in outside activities and focusing on my negatives to become better and stronger.

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?

Mentally prepare, eat well and just do it! Talk to yourself, listen to the voice in your head who says you CAN do it and keep focusing on your goals. Even if you feel like giving up, look in the mirror and tell YOU to never give up.

What’s your favourite cheat meal? Should I consider Oreos a meal? Candy Cane and Vanilla Fudge covered to name a few are favourite Oreos…Regular doesn’t even cut it anymore. But on a serious note, pizza and a big breakfast that MUST include french toast and waffles with maple syrup would be my other cheat meal(s).

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

2 rounds for time:
400m row
10 double unders
8 deadlifts (135 lbs/95 lbs)
6 box jumps (24″/20″)
4 wall balls (20 lbs/10 lbs)
2 good mornings (65/55lbs). *Snicker* 🙂

Athlete of the Week – James Ingraham

james ingraham2

What’s your name? James Ingrahm

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ? I signed up for 2 months – June and July when I was home. But I guess I’ve been an unofficial member for 9 months.

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Question 2 and 3 are kind of the same.

Was there a pivotal event that led you to us? After competing at both the collegiate and professional levels in tennis I needed something that provided the same level of competition. When I’m in Barbados for extended periods I usually do boxing and I had hoped to have my first sanctioned bout last summer. But for whatever reason about a week before coming to IF my mom told me that she really didn’t want me boxing anymore. At that moment I got a Facebook message from my buddy and fellow CrossFitter, Damian Alleyne. The message was something like “Hey, I heard you’re back in Bdos. You need to come check out CrossFit. It might be something you’d like.” Still in the conversation with my mom, I said, “Fine. I won’t box, I’ll do CrossFit instead.” To which she asked, “Does it involve you getting punched or kicked in the head?” She seemed to be relieved with the answer. I told Damian I’d come to check it out, but I had no intention of really doing it – plus, doing pullups and pushups were easy! Fast forward about a week, I made my appointment to do the fitness test and went to do it. When I saw the piece of paper with what the workout was going to be, I laughed to myself! Pushups, situps, squats, lunges…this gotta be the easiest fitness test ever I thought to myself. Holy crap I almost died. Once you add a time factor to anything, coupled with many people there trying to get more reps than you – the intensity factor goes thru the roof. From that first workout, I was hooked. CrossFit is now my sport.

What are your fave training shoes? I got some pretty sweet custom made Nano 2’s. But if Reebok wants to give me some, I’d happily wear whatever 🙂

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like? So after doing the fitness test you have to sign up for 3 “elements classes” which I wanted to get out the way AFAP so I could start working out. I did my 1st Tuesday morning, 2nd on Thursday morning and the 3rd on Thursday afternoon. Cary then asked me if I was going to do the Throwdown. No idea what that was – but I said Yes anyway. I’m not sure if that was a good or bad choice. It was 3 rounds x 30 sec of: box jump burpees, deadlifts (135) and pushups, with a 15 sec transition between each movement. We ended up coming 2nd in the Throwdown. But halfway thru I remember thinking, “This effin sucks, but I love it!!”

What tunes do you like working out to? Me and American Shane have a thing where the quote of the day (QOD) is related to the music in the WOD. Btw if you want a good laugh, ask him to “drop it lowtide” haha. Anything soca usually works pretty good, but realistically after 3 2 1 Go, it all becomes background noise.

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?  It has to be both my commitment to training and the CrossFit community. Before I used to try to find an excuse not to go run or workout, now if I’m having a busy day I’m trying to rearrange my schedule so I can at least do a 5min AMRAP of burpees. CrossFit has the best athletes is sports, period. In no other sport does the person coming last get cheered louder than the person coming first. In no other sport do you encourage your main competition to do their best and hit PRs.

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

My work and studies have got me stretched pretty thin, so I don’t have time for much in the way of hobbies anymore. But I certainly do make some time to hang out with the CrossFit ladies 🙂

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you? Shane deFreitas has started a WhatsApp group, so I’m constantly hearing about who is setting PRs and who is putting down silly times in workouts, so having that makes me work hard every day. But I’m actually most inspired by those people who are new to CrossFit and who finally get something done that they weren’t able to do before. That inspires me.

Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you? All of them. They can all do something that I can’t – and I want to be the best.

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about? Having the first ever national CF event on April 26, which sadly I won’t be there for. So I hope they have another in June or July!!

What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date? I suppose getting 303reps in 14.1 was pretty nice considering I only learnt how to do power snatches the night before. Also when 14.2 was announced my 1rm for OH squats was only 45 lbs due to mobility issues, so when I actually hit the 95# in the workout I was pretty excited.

What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed? Anything overhead needs to be worked on, HSPUs, OH squats, and squat snatches. I’m inches away from getting muscle ups done, so once I’ve got those figured out I’ll be ready for anything Dave Castro can throw at me.

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future? I can’t wait to be back in May! Also I’m a little bit sad for having to temporarily part with my unofficial Fittest Man in Bdos title, so I’m gunna work hard and hopefully take it back next year! 🙂

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit? Something I hear a lot from people who are new to CrossFit and are hesitant about joining is, “I can’t do what you can do, James.” There are scaling options available for everything. I hate it when people quit before they try. You’d be amazed what you can actually do. Come to IF, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Also, for the young girls that might have body image issues – STRONG IS THE NEW SKINNY #fact.

What’s your favourite cheat meal? I don’t really do the cheat meal thing, because moderation is for pansies, and a cheat meal would turn into a cheat day and into a cheat week. I eat pretty clean except for Sundays where I have sweet potato fries 🙂 But for sure the first thing I’m eating once I get back to Bdos is a roti from Chefette!

If you could program one WOD what would it be? I love anything that is 21-15-9 because it’s a sprint, and you’re going to be red-lining it the whole time. I programmed one the other day which had to have been the most gnarly experience of my life. It was:11 thrusters 95#, 10 burpees, 11 frontsquats 95#, 10 burpees, 11 pushpress 95#, 10 burpees. FOUR ROUNDS!!! When the burpees become the easiest part of a workout, you know you’re in trouble.

Athletes of the Week – Angela Mayers and Dr. Delores Griffith

Today we have a two-for-one special!

What are your names?
Angela ‘Steppa’ Mayers and Delores ‘Peppa’ Griffith
How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ?
Steppa: From before inception lol.
Peppa: 11 months to be precise 🙂
How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time?
Steppa: I was training with Coach Cary from previous times. Both personal training and MERI.
Peppa: After training with Coach Cary, Steppa and I needed a new home, to continue the early morning ‘Torture’. Opportunity knocked and we answered.
Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?
Steppa: Cary had a business opportunity to grow, and where he goes, I follow.
Peppa: Coach Cary changed locations. Plus I trust his judgement.
What are your fave training shoes?
Steppa: Currently, Nike Cross Trainers and a running shoe, especially for September when Cary likes to train us for Run Barbados.  Whether we want to or not.
Peppa: Adidas running shoes. Yuh neva know when running is going to be part of the training routine.
Can you remember your first workout? What was it?
Steppa: The very first was a personal training session with Peppa. It was when we were first introduced to the box (kettle bell work and wall balls). But I remember being the test dummies for the 1st Throwdown, that almost took our lives.
Peppa: I do not remember the exact exercises.  What I do remember, is the exhaustion we felt at the end and feeling special, knowing that we were the Throwdown guinea pigs 🙂
What tunes do you like working out to?
Steppa:  Bash or Soca, Bash or Bash, Rap or anything to keep me hyped.
Peppa: As long as there’s Reggae, Soca or Bash drowning out the infamous male moans and groans in our much sought after corner, I’m good.
What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting Crossfit?
Steppa: My dedication. When outside is too cold, and my bed feels amazing I get up 90% and show up and try my best. My ‘ego’ won’t let me fail. But I will scale.
Peppa: Naturally, I’m not a socialite. Ask Steppa! Coming to the box, forces me to interact with others. Plus Steppa helps me to ‘Shine’ 🙂
What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting?
Steppa: Working and sleeping. Same for both of us, lol.  Beauty Therapist at Genetics Salon.
Peppa: Wuk & Sleep are my other middle names. Otherwise, over the past six weeks, I’ve explored my love for trying new recipes and embracing the Paleo way of eating. And I enjoy serving my community as an ophthalmologist at QEH.
Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?
Steppa: Biggest inspiration is obvious. There’s something I can’t explain about my connection to my gym partner but we get up and we show up and despite the stink looks and the cussing, we push each other like sisters. Unified goals. But every MERI member gets on us to do better. Especially in our corner of the gym.
Peppa; Duh! Steppa of course. She’s my pint size of inspiration.
peppasteppa
Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you?
Steppa: Head Coach Cary, Ryan and Jason.
Peppa: Duh again! Coach Cary. Goes without saying. Seeing that we were asked to mention ‘a’ coach, I have to digress a bit and big up Ryan and Jason. I’ve been privileged to watch their growth, even from before CFIF.
What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?
Steppa: Being able to run up the gap and not be completely winded; endurance and strength. Getting better every day. And a better attitude to fitness rather than weight loss.
Peppa: Actually hanging from the rig and doing hanging knee raises. Coach Cary knows how to tap into my potential and point out when I can do more.
What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date?
Steppa: Doing my first 5K at Run Barbados 2013.
Peppa: Completing the 1 mile, 3K and 5K (wid Steppa by my side) at the 2013 Run Barbados.
What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed?
Steppa: Pull-ups.
Peppa: Unaided pull-ups.
What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?
Steppa: To aspire to inspire my fellow athletes and myself. It’s becoming addictive to see my body do things that it most definitely could not do a year ago.
Peppa: Wait, it’s been a year already? I want to get stronger and faster, while encouraging others to go the extra mile. And after losing 10 pounds recently, wanna get more defined muscles.
What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?
Steppa: It’s like Nike, just do it. It looks intimidating. I wouldn’t doubt that, but you can only try. Scaling is your best friend. I came in with fear surrounding a knee injury, which hindered me a lot. I’m at the stage I scale my workout to suit me and manage my “handicap”. Better with Coach Cary’s advice and training.
Peppa: Handicap, what!!! Seeing Steppa completing her first 5K, allows me to encourage anyone to stop contemplating and say ‘Come long and just do what you can’. Wid yuh bad knee and all. As Steppa said, scaling is your best friend. And don’t worry about all others who ‘look fit’. You will be competing against yourself. Not them!
What’s your favourite cheat meal?
Steppa: One meal? Lol.  Mojos’ burgers, ribs (especially from Smoke Pit), thin crusted pizza with a glass of red wine, HAM and Sorrel.
Peppa: Steppa is talking about ‘Happy’ Sorrel, of course. I have a sad sweet tooth. Most Haagen-Dazs ice creams in a sweet waffle cone. Oh Lawd!
If you could program one WOD what would it be?
Steppa: Dead lifts, plank to pikes, box jumps  and squats.
Peppa: Any kinda 5 minute WOD. Including sprinting, thrusters and wall balls. Such a rush!

Awesome Athlete of the Week, “Superman”!

This week we meet member-coach Ryan Johnson aka Superman!

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ?

10 months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time?

I was training with Coach Cary in his MERI program and one day he said he had found a new home for the program. That started my journey to the box where I have dabbled in MERI, WODS, Throwdowns and all the box has to offer

Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

MERI changed homes!!!

What are your fave training shoes?

Currently enjoying my Reebok Nanos 3.0 (unless it’s a long run)

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like?

Can’t remember my 1st but two early ones that stand out was a bank holiday “Fight Gone Bad” and a Saturday afternoon ‘Kelly’ ( 5 rounds for time 400m run, 30 box jumps, 30 wall ball shots). I remember thinking ‘Damn, this is rough’ during the workout and just after telling myself, ‘I love this ****!’

What tunes do you like working out to?

Doesn’t really matter what is playing. At 3..2..1. GO!!! It really is all just background noise

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

My commitment to training… Don’t get me wrong; before Crossfit I could be seen in a gym on a fairly regular schedule but any excuse not to go on a particular day I accepted. Nowadays I really look forward to my time in the box and find any reason to get my WOD on.

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

Monday to Monday I can be found at The West India Biscuit Company (WIBISCO) when not in the box and any little time away from these two ‘homes’ can be spent watching a comedy or following cricket around the globe.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you? To be honest… whenever I enter the box and see members giving their all… pushing for that last rep and I feel the community vibes…. I am inspired

Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you? Head Coach Cary and Coach J

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

Having multiple Thursday Throwdown victories

What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date?

2ndplace finishing in Mr. Caribbean Barbados (a physical fitness and physique competition).

What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed?

Handstand push-ups and muscle-ups. If I can get a grasp of those I feel I will have the skill set for anything Crossfit can throw at me. I won’t be a master but I will at least be able to squeeze out a few reps.

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

To continue to enjoy the experience and spend some time working on my weaknesses so by the time Open Workout 15.5 is complete my name can be on page 1 with the best in the region

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?

Just do it. Don’t get fooled by some who might say you need to get fit before starting Crossfit. That’s RUBBISH!!! Sign up and let’s get started achieving whatever your fitness goals may be

What’s your favourite cheat meal?

Let’s see….love me a Mojos burgers and a meat lovers pizza… and let’s not forget nachos and salsa  (Actually, I could probably have them all as one big cheat)

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

This WOD must have some running, dead lifts, and box jumps. Let’s have a 400m run to begin each round and the dead lifts and box jumps will probably follow a 21-15-9 rep scheme.

14.1-11 20131130_151413(1)

Awesome Athlete of the Week: Ife Clarke

This week, we interview Ife Sharifa Clarke.

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ?

7 months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time?

Long time Coach, Cary – brought me through the doors.

Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

Basically, I was at a point where I wasn’t training, and was bored with my routine –do it yourself workouts. I was allowing my work to become an excuse for why I wasn’t doing anything physical. I hit a brick wall where I wasn’t happy with my body or my level of fitness – So I told myself, enough with the excuses –it’s time to seriously commit and I couldn’t  think of anywhere else but Crossfit : Islandfit.

What are your fave training shoes?

I’m a Nike Girl but my Reebok Nano 2.0’s are seriously growing on me.

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like?

It was a Saturday WOD – N-A-N-C-Y!!! That was her name! One of the girls I would grow to have a love-hate relationship with. Five rounds for time of – 400 meter run, 15 reps Overhead squats.  I remember yelling at Coach Phil “I am DYING!!!!” and he was like you will be alright!! Honestly, I thought he was mad.  The relief of it being over was great – but knowing that I finished it – was an accomplishment!

What tunes do you like working out to?

Honestly, it depends on what workout I’m doing- but mostly high energy music – so gimme some Soca or Dancehall!!

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

My commitment – Nothing can stop me from going to the box!

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

Thinking about crossfit or watching crossfit videos – wait does that count as crossfitting ? LOL. To be honest, work takes up the remainder of my time. If I do have spare time I spend it with friends – there’s nothing like a good lime.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?

6 days a week I train with a group of individuals who are competitive, motivational , open to constructive criticism. The Games Prep Family inspires me because, every day they show me that anything is possible! They are undefeated, unafraid and unbroken – every challenge is met with mental and physical strength and an awesome support system! #lovemyteam

Is there a CFIF coach who inspires you?

Coach J – Have you been to his classes ? The energy is great! He is humble in his achievements and his commitment to his personal progress and those he coaches is amazing!

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

For me Crossfit is more mental than physical and every time I walk into the box, I have to overcome my fear and commit to whatever I’m doing. It has aided me in recognising my potential , harnessing it and giving it everything I’ve got and more. That’s a mindset,  I take with me through everyday and it has empowered me and made me more confident in living life.

What has been your greatest fitness achievement to date?

PULLUPS!!! If you were following my pull up journey you would know, I could NEVER get a pull up done! Although I’m only able to do one at a time right now I AM EXTREMELY PROUD of that achievement! It goes to show that commitment and practice are powerful tools!

What’s the next fitness goal to be smashed?

Basically getting on top of all the movements necessary to fully compete in the Crossfit Open and of course improve my endurance. So Handstand push ups, Toes to Bar , Muscle Ups and the list goes on. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m determined to be fully ready for 2015. #practicemakespermanent

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

I would have to say representing the box at Crossfit Games. Thats my current mindset – and it includes building and making myself a better athlete. Ensuring that I take the advice of my coaches and make the time to work on my weaknesses.

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?

You don’t have to go and get fit to start Crossfit!! Every movement can be scaled to a level where it is more manageable for you. Just challenge yourself as you progress ! You won’t regret it !

What’s your favourite cheat meal?

Sushi – and dark chocolate icecream – that’s my go to cheat meal!

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

I love team WODs – the energy in a team WOD is amazing for me so I would have to say a chipper team WOD consisting of Rowing, Olympic lifts , Wall balls, Pushups & Double Unders.

20131230_204801 20140120_214246

Awesome Athlete of the Week: Anna-Maria!

Today we are chatting to another one of our amazing members: Anna-Maria

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ? 5 Months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

One of my Facebook friends, Damian Alleyne, liked your Islandfit HQ page. So I followed the link….. I saw pictures and videos of this startup cross fit gym, with people doing some crazy work outs… I just had to try it.

What are your Fave training shoes?

My colourful Reebok Nano.2s

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like?

For my first workout, I remember going to a 5:30 WOD in the evening time. I arrived early to prep myself….waited and waited and no other members showed up for the class… just my luck haha…I ended up having a personal lesson with Coach Cary. I remember it had in push presses, but can’t recall the details as I was so nervous!

What tunes do you like working out to? Soca and old dub 🙂

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

The biggest thing that has changed since starting Cross fit, is my dedication to focus on getting healthy, and being prepared for anything life can throw at me.

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc. I

When I’m not in the box, I like to paddle board, swim and lime with friends. My career/work takes up the remainder of the time.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?

Everyone inspires me in the gym…. From the new athletes pushing themselves and learning the correct movements…to the more advanced athlete pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone…..to the coaches who take the time to correct you…and to Shane’s amazing gymnastic ability… I also have to say the ladies in the gym inspire me the most. It’s great to see women being able to lift the heavy weight right up there with the men.

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

When I started Cross fit I was not able to do underhand grips hold/hang for more than one second in the fitness test….I’m now up to 15 seconds. Another movement that seemed impossible to me, but seemingly easy to everyone else was box jumps. Now, only just last week, I did all the box jumps prescribed in the WOD, it took me long, but I got it done! 🙂

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

It’s the small achievements mentioned above, that keep you coming back wanting more.

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit? Seriously, just go and sign up! Don’t wait any longer and stop making excuses! It’s a great community, where the person who finishes last gets the most cheers (right Phil J)

Whats your favourite cheat meal?

Sushi, wine and caramel cake with vanilla ice-cream.

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

Hmmm.. Good question… I hate running, pushups and the famous burpee pushups. I would do a WOD with all these things to test myself….

Thanks Anna-Maria !

Athlete of the Week: Andrea Franklin!

Today we are chatting to another one of our amazing members: Andrea F. aka Frankie

How long have you been a member at IslandFitHQ?

I believe since April, I did my elements before the official opening of the gym

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

I was interested in doing cross fit to change up my training routine from just weights and cardio on the machines, was just looking for the right time and place. When I heard that Cary was joining forces with the Docs to open CF:IF  I immediately checked it out.

What are your Fave training shoes?

Hmm my asics for running (when my knees allows it) and of course my Nanos.

Can you remember your first workout? What was it like?

Not exactly the first… I remember my first Saturday WOD; it was only Nicole and I and we met our good friend “Karen”: 150 wall squats, uggghhhhh!

What tunes do you like working out to?

Soca of course!

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

My fitness level has improved, endurance still has a long way to go, but one step at a time.

What are you doing when you aren’t CrossFitting? Career, hobbies etc

Well when I am not working as a marketing consultant, which can be all hours, I am in the gym or just chilling at home. Spending time with family and friends, enjoying a good laugh is always welcomed. Travelling to rejuvenate is a must from time to time.

Is there a CFIF member who inspires you?

My #FitFam (they know who they are) J and of course the coaches who are always pushing me to do more.

What achievement at CFIF are you most stoked about?

Generally improvement in my fitness and strength.

What are your IslandFit Plans for the future?

Well I first have to get the fundamentals perfected. I must get pull ups, double-unders, handstand push-ups down. The original target was year end but that has been derailed by my knee injury (and refusal to get up at 4:00 am with Chanda and Coach G). After that anything can happen, no stopping.

What advice would you have for those thinking about joining us at IslandFit?

Just do it! It’s not about the competition, know your limits and work accordingly. As they say always leave your ego at the door.

Whats your favourite cheat meal?

Red velvet cup cakes, duhhhhh!

If you could program one WOD what would it be?

AMRAP – 15mins

10 cleans – 95/75

25 wall squats

10 handstand push ups

50 SL sit ups

Thanks Andrea!

4 months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

Thanks to Kristina Evelyn and her open water swim event that was held earlier this year.  CFIF was a sponsor at the event and very generous with giving Kristina some memberships to give away at the swim…I scored myself one and have not looked back since!
